Book review

In many convents of nuns corporal punishment were carried out in the presence of all, and such an outrage was justified by the words of Scripture: "shame sinners in the presence of all". In 1817, a church council decided that the guilty should be punished monks physically in the presence of all the monks to their greater shame. Cardinal Damien says that nudity is mandatory for corporal punishment of persons of both sexes as well as how to punish the sinner should not be ashamed to be in the same position in which he was the Christ. Jesuits advised flagellation on the naked body as a means of self-mortification.
