Perhaps this turn of affairs was sad for her. Yet it was at least the lesser evil and the only way out for her. It was impossible to hang in the air. It was impossible so directly and openly ignored by the public. There was no one to shine only by reflected light, and recognized only out of loyalty to the Council. It was impossible to be emasculated with the machinery of government. It was impossible not to have any "attribute of power" ... it is necessary to buy it all, even at the cost of compromise, even at great cost. To this end, there was only one real remedy.
